Epistle to the Colossians-Philemon

This volume presents a full exegetical and theological commentary on the Epistles to the Colossians and Philemon. It follows Paul’s proclamation of the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ in Colossians and his deeply personal appeal for Christian reconciliation in Philemon, showing how both letters call believers to live out the transforming implications of the gospel in the church, the household, and the relationships of everyday life. 

Colossians emphasizes the cosmic supremacy of Christ, the fullness of salvation found in him, and the new life of those who have died and been raised with Christ. Philemon brings those convictions into a concrete relationship, as Paul appeals for Onesimus to be received no longer merely according to former social status but as a beloved brother in the Lord. 

The commentary gives sustained attention to the letters’ major interpretive questions, including the Christ hymn of Colossians 1:15–20, the nature of the teaching opposed in Colossae, Paul’s language of fullness, reconciliation, and participation in Christ, the household instructions of Colossians 3, and the social and theological implications of Paul’s appeal for Onesimus in Philemon. Throughout, the aim is to explain each letter clearly while showing how Christ’s lordship reshapes doctrine, worship, community, and Christian conduct.
